Job Opportunities for Filipinos in New Zealand Empty Job Opportunities for Filipinos in New Zealand

Post by Admin Tue Mar 10, 2009 10:03 pm

While some overseas Filipino workers (OFW) in some countries are displaced and sent home ahead of their contracts, New Zealand looks to hiring more Filipino workers as it opens up more jobs. What’s ironic is that New Zealand has strict and demanding selection criteria for migrant workers.

But Philip Burdon, chairman of the Asia New Zealand Foundation, said that Filipinos are expected to get jobs in New Zealand because of their English proficiency and positive attitude towards work, despite their ‘elitist’ criteria.

He added that the Philippines is their second largest source of labor. According to him, Asians make up 11 percent of the New Zealand population, a sizeable increase because in 1993, Asians comprise only 2.7 percent of their population. This is even expected to grow up to 1 million or 25 percent of the population by 2026.

Burdon said that most Filipinos who come to New Zealand to work usually stay as permanent residents because they are able to acclimatize to the culture in the country. He further explained that New Zealand became strict in issuing working visas because they would like to make sure that foreign workers who enter their country will land a job. “We are very transparent with what we need. We have very strict qualifications as to who will qualify for migration,” he said.

Currently, Filipinos looking to work in New Zealand may check for openings in the following industries: agriculture, tourism, hospitality and information and communication technology. Unfortunately for Filipino nurses, they don’t have any opening right now so they just have to wait a little longer.

Meanwhile, chairman of International Student Advisors Corp Philip Leonardo said that by the end of March, the United Kingdom government would be enforcing a new system for those entering UK using student visas starting April. This new system, which is so-called “points-based” system, is seen to slow down application for National Vocations Qualifications courses (NVQ) by Filipino healthcare professionals.
